i finished ‘adolescence’ last night and i think it perfectly captured the horrifying causes of toxic social media consumption (unbeknownst to parents). jamie fell into the manosphere and adopted those ideologies ; red pill/incel culture, andrew tate, etc.
it’s terrifying because there’s such a realness to it. today’s youth is constantly being exposed to these intense environments and it really breaks my heart.
how have i never heard of adolescence? sound right up my alley, plus a comparison to cursed bunny, which haunted me for weeks after i finished it... DEFINITELY have to check this out. thx!
I found it terrifying that it implied that Jamie could not understand the weight of death but could understand the graphic things he wanted to do with young women. Also a lot of the time the mother was trying to calm down the father in the last episode (and flinching) and it maybe hinting to abuse that happened that night at the shed??
yes absolutely also ive heard ppl talking about that one hand movement of the father where he kinda tries to hit the mother in the last scene. it is very unsettling but the truth and the way jamie wanted the psychiatrist to tell him that she liked him was crazyyy
That was so easy to read, Kash. And oh my goodness... I had trouble coming to terms with what Jamie did and I think I had to wrestle with how "normal" he appeared. It wasn't until the psychologist episode that I saw glimpses of the rage you're talking about but it really shook me when I realised that there are so many Jamies (regardless of gender) and it really shouldn't take a murder to address how much unaddressed emotions we all carry. Loved reading this!
I have seen two episodes. I agree with everything you said except that the father is detached. He may be unobservant and uninvolved but has real feels. I also want to emphasize that the rage inside the boys is matched by the destructiveness of the girls. Humans and their damn animalistic pecking orders. This show is very much about that;at school, at the police department, in the family units, ad infinitum. Thanks for letting me spew.
Im raising two small boys and I’m terrified. That’s what reading this made me think. And now I just want to fall asleep in their gentleness and imagine I can protect them from their own anger. Yet I cannot even protect them from mine. I’m terrified
Oophtah! This was deep, in a stark and itch-my-brain kinda way and now I’m adding things to my “to be read” and “to be watched” list and I couldn’t be more thankful! I’m glad I’m thinking about it now ;)

ikrrr i kept thinking “he’s just a regular guy,” and that’s what made it so unsettling. like he wasn’t some obvious ticking time bomb😭💀

you're amazing and this take is amazing. thank you for writing.
i have yet to watch the show but I think it is such an important topic to discuss because it is happening, which is scary.

this is so perfectly written and so so important to talk about
I really loved adolescence, it made me personally reflect a lot
wow! just added to my watch list! thank you for the recommendation!
This is an excellent piece if writing. You successfully called me out and changed my mind on a few aspects and for this I am grateful.
Now I know what to watch and possibly read next, as a mom to an almost 21 year old son, I am curious, thank you.
its a bit terrifying how common this topic has become but yeah🤍
